PROJECT PORTFOLIO
Private Residence
Arlington, Virginia
| Before
the renovation, this home seemed like a fortress, with a flat face
to the street and no obvious entrance other than the garage. A whole
house renovation included a new kitchen
and new bathroom, as well as a dramatic
new front that makes the house more welcoming. |
| The
Mansard roof, which was in good shape, inspired a French style of
design that included all new windows, elongated windows on the second
floor (in the living room), and molding and trim under the roof. A
stone-like base (actually made of contoured synthetic stucco) around
the entrance gives it more weight and better proportion. |
Pulling
out the main entrance (still located on the side of the house)
and adding double doors created a grander entrance foyer.
The
overgrown side yard was trimmed and landscaped to provide a charming
entrance patio area that makes visitors feel welcome. |
The dramatic three-story entrance foyer lets natural light pour
into the house through multiple windows.
